6 to 18 months of age: This is the period of the fastest skeletal growth. After 18 months, the frame becomes fully developed. Feeding regimens will only build fat thereafter, making it very difficult to enlarge the overall frame. After 18 months, shift focus to fattening, weight gain and fat deposition.

II. Core Nutrition for Frame Development: Balanced Calcium & Phosphorus, Trace Elements, and High-Quality Forage
  1. Calcium: Supports bone hardness, limb structure, and rib expansion.
  2. Phosphorus: Promotes bone lengthening and development of the spine and long limb bones. Maintain a strict 2:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.
  3. Vitamin D: Enhances calcium absorption. Without adequate vitamin D, supplemental calcium will be ineffective, easily resulting in splayed feet, bowed legs, and stunted skeletal growth.
  4. Trace elements: Zinc, manganese, and magnesium regulate bone cell division. Narrow shoulders, narrow hindquarters and compact frames in cattle are commonly caused by manganese and zinc deficiencies.
III. General Homemade Rations
1. Forage (65%–70% of total daily feed; the primary feed for frame development)

Priority order:

Chinese Wildrye > High-Quality Corn Silage > Peanut Vine Hay > Alfalfa Hay

Adequate forage is essential. Insufficient forage causes cattle to develop internal organs and fat rather than growing vertically, preventing proper frame expansion.

Avoid excessive single feed sources such as distiller’s grains and soybean residue, which are highly acidic, inhibit calcium absorption, and increase the risk of osteomalacia.

2. Concentrate Feed (30%–35% of total daily feed, formulated for nutrition supplementation rather than rapid fattening)

Basic formula (per 100 jin of concentrate):

60 jin corn, 22 jin soybean meal, 12 jin wheat bran, 4 jin premix, 2 jin baking soda

Wheat bran is essential: it contains natural phosphorus, improves gut health, and supports skeletal lengthening.

Avoid continuous high-corn, high-protein fattening diets, as early maturing cattle will remain permanently small-framed.

  1. Dicalcium phosphate: Add 1.5–2 jin per 100 jin of concentrate to balance calcium and phosphorus levels.
  2. Cod liver oil / Vitamin D3 powder: Mix into feed daily to resolve poor calcium absorption.

Confined cattle must be turned out for 2–4 hours of daily exercise. Permanent tethering or tight pen confinement restricts limb movement, leading to short legs, splayed feet and stunted frames. Free-range grazing and large exercise yards are the most cost-effective methods to boost frame growth.

2. Adequate Sunlight

Sun exposure enables natural vitamin D synthesis, which is twice as effective as supplemental vitamin D. Ensure a minimum of 4 hours of daily sunlight in winter.

3. Prevent Chronic Diseases

Chronic diarrhea, respiratory disease and parasites deplete nutrition, leaving cattle in a persistent subhealthy state and halting skeletal growth.

Management routine: Deworm after weaning → repeat internal & external deworming every 3 months; provide stomach conditioning supplements monthly.

4. Dry & Non-Slip Housing

Damp barns raise the risk of foot rot and osteomalacia. Painful feet discourage standing and movement, stopping frame development entirely.
